How to care for your dentures

Aug. 13, 2024

Partial dentures are an excellent option in replacing missing teeth. However, even though your partial dentures are made of Valplast, it is still vital to care for them the way you would natural teeth. Cleaning your dentures regularly improves the longevity of your device, prevents stains and maintains oral health.

How should my partial dentures be cared for?

Dentures go through quite a bit of wear and tear throughout the day. Whether it's plaque or stuck on food and drink, cleaning is key to maintaining your device. Otherwise, buildup can occur and put you at risk for gum disease and bad breath. Dentures should be cared for just as you would your natural teeth, but special care should be taken to avoid scratching or dulling the surface. Small, battery powered sonic denture cleaners are the best way to remove particles from your device. Brushing your device should generally be avoided, however if necessary you can use a soft-bristled toothbrush and water to remove particles and buildup from your device. Hard bristled brushes and abrasive toothpaste should be avoided as they can scratch and dull the surface of your device.

There are a number of denture cleaners on the market. However, not all are created equal. It is recommended to use either the Smile Again or Val-Clean denture cleaners for ResetSmile partial dentures. These two particular brands are proven to be effective in cleaning the Valplast resin ResetSmile uses to make partial denture devices.

Proper cleaning and care

ResetSmile recommends using ResetSmile cleaner and disinfectant that cleans your partial dentures. To use, simply stir one packet in a container of warm water and wait for it to dissolve. Once dissolved, place your partial dentures in the solution for twenty minutes. Once that is complete, simply rinse under water. It is also recommended to use a brush and ultrasonic bath for increased cleaning.

FAQ

Should you keep dentures in water overnight?

Most types of dentures need to stay moist in order to keep their shape and to help maintain hygiene. ResetSmile dentists recommend keeping your device in a solution of SmileAgain Cleaner or water whenever you are not wearing your dentures. ResetSmile recommends using the SmileAgain Retainer Cleaner and disinfectant on all partial dentures, including non-ResetSmile provided devices and appliances. This does not require an overnight soak and instead suggests soaking your dental appliance in the solution for twenty minutes and then rinsing under running water.

How many hours a day should you wear your dentures?

It is recommended to wear your partial dentures during your waking hours. This practice prevents your natural teeth from shifting, which would cause fit issues with your partial denture. Along with other forms of dentures, it is recommended to remove ResetSmile partial dentures for sleep. This allows your teeth and gums to rest.

What should you not clean dentures with?

It is not recommended to use brands other than Smile Again or Val-Clean on partial dentures. Brands other than these two have not been proven to effectively clean Valplast, the material used to create the ResetSmile partial denture devices.
